  • About Old Mt. Zion

    Our History

In 1973, a small group of devout Christians embarked on a voyage quite similar to the Pilgrims long ago in Kingstree, SC.

This little band of Christians meditated and waited on the Lord. One day the Lord moved in the hearts of Mrs. Mary Ann Middleton and Mr. Albert Tharpe. They took their concerns to Bishop Arthur Marshall, Jr. of the ninth Episcopal District of the A.M.E. Zion Church. Bishop Marshall consulted with Presiding Elder C.J. Jenkins, Dr. Lem Long, Rev. Z.B. Wells and Rev. W.R. Jones to set the wheels in motion to build Old Mount Zion A.M.E. Zion Church.

The small band of Christians had begun worship services at the home of its faithful warriors. Prayer services and Church meetings were held weekly in the homes of Daisy Fulton, Eddie and Thomasina Miller, Johnnie and Laura Wallace, and Mary Ann Middleton. Finally, the Lord moved in the Hearts of the members of North Kingstree Baptist Church and Rev. Eugene Burrows who opened their church doors to Old Mt. Zion every 2nd and 4th Sundays for worship services.

Bishop Marshall appointed Rev W.R. Jones as a part time pastor for Old Mt. Zion for several months. Then he appointed Rev. James A Diggs as a full-time pastor for this dedicated flock of Christians.

The Ground breaking ceremony was held on, January 20, 1974, at Bethel A.M.E. Church. The Corner Stone was laid, and the Dedication service was held Nov. 9, 1975.

Through the years the Lord has blessed this congregation with God Fearing Pastors, namely Rev. W.R. Jones; Rev. James A. Diggs; Rev. Blair; Rev. Marion Wilson; Rev. Clifford Barnett; Rev. Michael Polk; Rev. Eddie Jones; Rev. Dr. G.G. Johnson; Rev. Benjamin Miller, Sr.; Rev. John S Gary, Sr.; Rev. Dr. Robbie C McKesson and Rev. Monica C. Davis.

As we move forward, let us continue to remember the Old Mt. Zion Church Family and their years of faithfulness by repurposing our ministry.

    Our Mission

    What We Do

Old Mt. Zion A.M.E. Zion church is an amazing Christian society of believers who love to evangelize to the lost, pray for the flock, and spread love through fellowship. We believe in sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ as commissioned to all saints according to Matthew 28:19-20 "Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you."

    Our Vision

    Our Future

Jesus trained a handful of ordinary people to follow Him as He established God’s kingdom on earth. His primary training method was intimate, personal conversations on a friend-to-friend basis. As they walked along in the daily routines of life, he taught them the practical principles of the Kingdom. He then commissioned them to go and make disciples of all nations by teaching others what they had learned.

At Old Mt. Zion we follow Jesus's training by sharing the gospel and making disciples one person at a time.

  • Ministerial Alliance

Old Mt. Zion A.M.E. Zion Church is proud to be in alliance with Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, Greater Bethel A.M.E. Church, and Siloam Baptist Church. This alliance was formed many years ago. Every year, the members meet at alternating churches with alternating ministers to attend Watch Night Services (New Year’s Day) and Sunrise Services (Easter).

It is a tradition in the black church in America that five minutes before midnight, men, women, and children will kneel, hold hands, and pray to God from the present year into the new year.

Also, many churches in the American South still hold traditional sunrise services as a sign of recognition that Jesus no longer lay in the tomb on Easter morning. On Easter Sunday morning, many Christians will rise before the sun to attend a sunrise worship service.

These services provide meaningful sermons, heart-filled hymns, praises to God, and fellowship.

    Ministries

    Auxiliaries

Church boards are called the “auxiliaries.” It is the responsibility of each auxiliary to provide some type of financial support for the Church Program during the conference year. Each group must select a date on the church calendar for its regular meetings as well as its planned activities in support of the Church.

We encourage you to select an organization and become active in your local Church. The more active you are, the more you feel a part of the Church. If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact the Church office at 843-355-9466.

    Bereavement Ministry

This team of volunteers provides assistance and follow-up care to bereaved Old Mt. Zion families beyond the funeral. This care includes occasional telephone calls, cards and/or visits, and a package of spiritual materials to provide comfort and understanding.

    Board of Stewards

This body is appointed annually by the pastor to be responsible for the overall needs of the local church: finances, pastor, and spiritual and general welfare of the members. They are also responsible for the service of communion to the members and delivery to those who are sick and shut-in. The pastor also appoints a president pro tempore from this board to act on his/her behalf in his/her absence. The pastor has veto powers on any action taken in his/her absence.

    Board of Trustees

The members of this board are nominated by the Pastor and elected by the membership at an election called by the pastor. Their responsibilities include the temporal concerns of the church, i.e. church property, buildings, equipment, etc.

    Board of Christian Education

This Commission is responsible for planning and presenting programs and information to educate and enlighten the congregation. This information is designed to lead to a better and informed knowledge of the Holy Scriptures, the Christian Religion, the Christian Church, and the implementation of these values in our daily lives.

    Multimedia Ministry

The purpose of the Multimedia Ministry here at Old Mt. Zion A.M.E.Z. is to carry the Gospel of Jesus Christ to our ever changing world through the use of technology and media, and to equip other ministries of our church to use digital and electronic media as a worship and outreach tool. This ministry not only provides the technical support required for our worship services, but also records various events, teachings, and sermons which are made available for viewing here on our web site or on our YouTube Channel.

    Food Service Ministry

This group of volunteers is responsible for all food functions at the church. This means any event or program requiring food must be handled through the Food Service Ministry. No food is to be brought in from outside by any person or group. If interested, there are several areas of service to volunteer your time and talents: cooks, servers, beverage servers, set-up, clean-up, etc.

    Lay Organization

The Lay Organization is comprised of the laity (non-clergy) of the church. It operates on all levels of the church: local church, conference, district, and connectional levels. Old Mt. Zion participates on all levels. The local activities include A.M.E. Zion training at monthly meetings, outreach projects, and a quarterly food drive.

    Sunday Church School

This staff of teachers, assistants, and a superintendent provides Christian Education for children, teens and adults in four areas: Primary (ages 3-7), Juniors (ages 8-13), and Adults (ages 14-21). The church school also participates in other joint projects such as the Easter Egg Hunt, the Annual Harvest Festival, Christmas activities, and an occasional trip. The Church School also participates with other A.M.E. Zion Churches in the Eastern District Sunday School Convention and Annual Conference.

    Vacation Bible School

This is a week-long program during the summer vacation time. It is a week filled with Christian education activities, arts & crafts, dinner, and lots of fun and fellowship. It is also an outreach ministry for the Kingstree community, inviting youth and adults of all ages to participate.

    Mass Choir

This choir of adults renders music for our worship services every Sunday at 11:00 a.m. and other programs and events as requested.

    Youth Choir

This choir consists of youth ranging in ages from 5-19 years old. They render music for our worship services every 3rd Sunday of the month and other programs and events as requested.

  • Power of Prayer

    Sunday

I have told you these things so that in Me you may have PEACE. In this world, you will have trouble, but take heart! I have overcome the world.John 16:33

Let us pray: Father, thank You that You are our source of PEACE. Thank You that when we are troubled on every side, all we have to do is stay focused on You, and You will keep us in perfect PEACE. We thank You, that as we live in the radiance of Your presence, Your peace will shine upon us. In Jesus’s name, Amen.

    Monday

Wherefore, I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and love unto all the saints, cease not to give thanks for you in my prayers; that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the spirit of revelation in the knowledge of Him. Ephesians 1:15-17

Let us pray: Father, thank You that we believe and have faith in Jesus. We’re grateful that You put love in our hearts for each other, and thank You for giving us wisdom, knowledge, and revelation in knowing You personally. In Jesus's name we pray. Amen.

    Tuesday

Therefore I say to You, what things so ever ye desire, when you pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.
    Mark 11:24

Let us pray: Father in heaven, thank You for Your promise that if we believe, we receive. While we are praying, our prayer request will be granted. We believe that Your promises are true because You are not like man that You should lie. Thank You Lord that You delight in answering our prayers. We thank You in advance for answered prayers because we believe! In Jesus’s name, Amen.

    Wednesday

O Give thanks unto the Lord; for He is good; because His mercy endureth forever. PSALMS 118:1

Let us pray: O Lord, how we praise You for Your goodness! Your word says that all good and perfect gifts come from You. You shower us with new mercies every day. You are such a good, good Father! Thank You so much for the gift of life this day. Help us to give this day back to You by using the gifts that You’ve given us for Your glory! We lift our hands in praise to You for Your good gifts and Your mercy that have no end! Hallelujah! In Jesus’s name, Amen.

    Thursday

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. Proverbs 3:5

Let us pray: Heavenly Father, this day, help us not to go on what we think, but help us to acknowledge Your Holy Spirit in us, and get direction from You. We can trust You because You know all things. You know the beginning to the end. You are the all wise, all knowing, ever present God. So instead of us trying to figure things out, help us to trust You, the one who has already worked it out. In Jesus's name, we pray. Amen.

    Friday

What then will we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? Romans 8:31

Let us pray: God our Father, thank You that You are with us. You are for us; therefore, we are winners. No matter what comes our way, we win. Coronavirus will not win. No weapon formed against us shall prosper. No matter how it looks, things we don’t seem to comprehend, but because You are for us, we know that no one or nothing will succeed, for You are a mighty God. and we put our trust in You. Thank You for fighting our battles. In Jesus’s name, we pray, Amen.

    Saturday

Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7

Let us pray: Thank You Lord that You care about what concerns me. Thank You that I don’t have to worry or be in fear because You are working out whatever concerns me for my good. Because I cast all my concerns to You, and because You care for me, I’m not burdened with the cares of this world. I am free to serve You in the newness of life. I simply trust You to work on my behalf. In Jesus’s name, Amen.

  • Meet Our Pastor

    Rev. Monica C. Davis

Reverend Monica Carter Davis was born in St. Stephen, South Carolina, the second oldest child born to Deacon Edward and Carrie Carter. She is a 1990 graduate of the former St. Stephen High School and 1995 graduate of Charleston Southern University with a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Speech Communications. She is an employee of Berkeley County School District working faithfully to meet the needs of families at Mt. Holly Elementary School. She is married to Calvin Davis. They are the proud parents of four children and one grandchild.

Reverend Davis began her work in the church at an early age. She grew up singing in the choir, ushering on Sundays, leading the youth department, and teaching Sunday School in the A.M.E. and Baptist church. Giving her life to Christ at a young age, she was always eager to learn all that she could. Growing up watching her parents serve faithfully has groomed her to become the devout leader and Christian she is today. She continues her work serving on many boards and auxiliaries in the A.M.E. Zion Church.

Reverend Davis was ordained a Deaconess in the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in 2011 and in 2013 was elevated to the office of Elder. Her pastoral duties began at New Vision A.M.E. Zion Church in North Charleston, South Carolina. Her leadership extended five faithful years there. She was then appointed to Temple of God A.M.E. Zion Church for two dedicated years. Currently, her pastoral ministry offers her the opportunity to be appointed the pastor of Old Mt. Zion A.M.E. Zion Church in Kingstree, South Carolina.

Her mission is to love and serve God’s people; to make disciples one vessel at a time; and be a game changer for Christ wherever she is assigned.
